So what is “Cloud Computing” anyway, and why do I care?
“Cloud computing” is a rather nebulous term that is widely thrown around on the Internet. What exactly is it?
CariNet stands by the following definition: a type of computing where dynamic resources are provided as a service over the Internet.
That’s it! The important thing is that the end user doesn’t need to have any knowledge whatsoever about the technology or system that’s providing the service to them. They simply use the service. Ah, ignorance is bliss. Especially when you’re not the one getting called when “the website is down!”…
These services can be:
- Website builder application
- Photo service, like Flickr®
- Online task management system
- etc, etc, etc
In a technical sense, any sort of hosted service is “cloud computing”, including services hosted on a dedicated server! So CariNet has actually been involved in cloud computing for the past decade.
The resources that provide “cloud” services are typically virtualized and can be scaled dynamically to the current demands of the users.
